Ok so this works and is the best free way of speeding up your computer aside form formating the entire thing and installing SP2. Also you can rebot your computer to the last reboot point, but thats not what im going to show you.
OK, I dont know how long this will take You but it took me about 10 hours. (one day of letting the computer work while i cleaned the house)
*Note, Please Read the whole artical befor starting
Difficulty = Medium
1. Turn off Microsoft Automatic Updates, all they do is slow down your computer and give you more "important" crap you don't need
Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates
Click the bubbel that says "Turn Off Automatic Updates", then "apply", and then "Ok" closing out of this window.
2. Remove all Microsoft Security updates.
start -> Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs
At the top of this Box Hit "Show updates"
Once this loads go down to "Windows XP - Software Updates"
click on one of the "Security updates For Windows XP", and click "Remove"
*Note: you see me uninstalling "update For Windows XP", I am only doing this as an exampel, do not Actely uninstall it
*Note: Moste updates must be uninstaled in order from newist to oldest.
*Note: Some Updates may not uninstall, don't worry about these
*Note: Do Not Uninstall anny thing other than a security update
Ok so follow through with what it sais to uninstall, at one point it will bring up a list of programs instaled on your computer. Just hit ok and go on.
Before you hit finish look to see if there is a littel box that says "restart now", if ther is un-check it, you can wait till you are done to restart the computer.
Once you have uninstaled all the updates you can restart your computer.
3. Uninstall any Un-necessary software
start -> Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs
go here and start uninstalling programs you don't nead (follow the instructions for how to uninstall updates), such as iTunes, keyboard tracker, Ect.
4. Next You nead to do a windows registery scan and repair, I Prefer Free Windows Registery fixer (this is a link) Wich i have uploaded for you convinceince.
Once you download it right-click it and send the contints to another folder, inside there is an .EXE self-extracting file, tell it to go to "C:\Program Files\"
Once this is done oppen it up and finde the file "Regpair.exe"
Once it turns on Click the butten that says "Full Scan" and wallk away
When it is done Click "Fix Errors" and let it do its thing
5. Defragment Your Computer
Defragmenting Will pull Nule data together that is sitting and taking up lace on your computer, it makes the whole thing run faster becasu programs aren't every where.
Start -> Run
Once run is open type in "dfrg.msc"
When it oppens up you want to hit "Defragment" and walk away (this will take a while)
6. Disc Cleanup
Your Disc Cleanup will Deleate anny un-used data on you computer that
you don't need.
Start -> Run
This time when Run starts type in "cleanmgr.exe"
After a littel bit itil ask you what you want to remove, you can safely remove everything EXCEPT Logs
go ahead and clean up the hardrive.
7. Turn off XP Graphics
XP's graphis only take up more VM to produce and relly hurt you for nothing, if you look at mine im not using them and this is somthing what it will look like when its done.
Start -> Control Pannel -> System
Go to the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under Performance.
Select the 'Adjust for best performance' radio button, then Apply, and OK.
*Note: once you do this your PC Will look like shit so if you want to go to Start -> Control Panel -> Display
Display Propertys and set it to High Contrast # 2, then Apply
8. Set Pagefile size
Start -> Controll Pannel -> System
Go to the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button under Performance.
Now switch to this Advanced tab, and click on 'Change' under Virtual Memory.
You will see the 'Initial Size (MB)' and the Maximum Size (MB)'.
Change 'Initial Size' to the same value as 'Maximum Size' then click set.
9. Make Windows load faster
Start -> Run
type in "msconfig"
Click on the BOOT.INI tab at the top.
Over to the right there will be a box labeled Timeout with 30 in it. Change the 30 to a 3.
Hit Apply, it will ask you to restart, just hit restart later
10. Turn off Start up Process
Start up process are relly un-nescory programs that run all the time.
Start -> Run
type in "msconfig"
go over to start up, start Un-Checking names from the folder "program files" to programs that you KNOW you dont nead at start up. when you are done hit apply
11. Services list
Ok so this is going to be the hardest and longest but it will make the biggest difference
Start -> Run
Msconfig
In another window Google "Windows XP SP 3 Services list".
You will have to go through every process and decide wich ones you will nead, turn all others off.
Once done hit appply, it will ask you to reset, go ahead and reset.
*Note: Every time you start up it will bring up a small text block about this, hit ok and tell it not to restart
*Note: Do Not Turn off crucial components, if you do it will not start.
