Sorry mybad. Took a look at that cd, the installer is for DX8c, XP comes with just plain DX8. Also, newer DX versions should work perfectly fine with older cards. Older cards don't support pixel / fragment shaders and vertex buffer objects. If anything, the card's drivers should tell software what the card is capable of, which in turn should prevent programs from even trying to use shaders. It's up to the program to probe the drivers to see what they can and can't do. Using them anyway doesn't crash the program, they just won't work. Like I said, on my old laptop I just saw black where shaders were being used. No, I must think the DX installer is intelligent enough to detect the existing DX version and prevents installation if a newer one is installed. DirectX can be uninstalled from a pc. I only suggest DX6 because - He said he was using an old pc, and DX6 pre-dates shaders.
- There's a Jabo DX6 plugin that works great.
Also, newer DX versions should work perfectly fine with older cards. Stuff like TuneUp isn't a perfect cure-all. They do not catch everything, they do not restore the system to a state anywhere close to a fresh install. There's a limit on how many times you can use a product key for windows, if you keep fresh-installing it every time you get a bit of lag, one day you're gonna be super pissed when you can't register it. (It happened to me. I went pc-less for 2 months, saving up to buy Win7) The best way to speed up your pc is: - Clean your registry
- Do a disk cleanup
- Defragment
- Turn off all visual themes and effects
- Turn off system sounds
- Remove all startup applications
- Archive commonly accessed files and folders
- Keep your desktop clean
- Increase your paging file (I usually keep mine at ~7GB)
- Lower the audio frequency in your control panel. You can't tell the difference anyway.
- Overclock your processor (~10% over should be safe, anything more you should install some heat sinks or some kind of coolant)
And I'm starting to understand why certain other people have such a low opinion of you -.- You said I was wrong, I said you were wrong. It's a intellectual debate, opinions don't matter. Incessant rambling here: Aside from that point, it's actually quite the opposite. I get asked all the time by people to help with mods, programming, and web design. Sanguinetti just told me 2 days ago that he thinks I'm the second most knowledgable person on the F3DEX2 format (which I personally don't think is true) and have even been asked to take ownership of Modshack, which I turned down feeling that it wasn't my place (though I've discussed doing it anyway considering that the site is dead now). The thing that people (aka. the GCN) don't like about me is that I'm 100% neutral. I don't care about your race, religion, status, wealth, abilities, whatever. I judge people by their actions alone and believe everyone has equal say. When I'm wrong, I'm quick to apologize and (completely unrelated to this topic) I don't take kindly to people who resolve to insults and logical fallacy to defend their side of an argument.
The whole GCN incident actually wouldn't have turned out as bad as it did if I hadn't had an extremely bad day (lost my house, my job, and every penny I had in 1 day) and took out my anger on the URA project. I tried resolving the problem at first, but sent it to Zeth's wrong email address. I assumed he was ignoring me, so I anonymously created a second user to sneak my way into the community. After getting caught for the 5th or 6th time, I was fed up and the "WTF?!?!?" topic was born. Eventually, everything was settled and Zeth had no problem letting me come back but the other team members didn't like the idea because they thought I was just trying to destroy the community. The stipulation to my return was that I was on a sort of 'probation'. Naxyldritt was to supervise my behavior for the time being. I was reading the URA's faqs page, noticed some questionable details, and figured a good way to show I was trying to be beneficial to the community would bring the details to their attention, so if they were mistakes they could be fixed. One of them (Blinx) took advantage of the fact that I was walking on thin ice, and tried to twist my words and start shit. Naxyldritt said to move the junk into a private discussion. Blinx pm'd me first ranting at me. I kept a cool head the whole time and my only comments to him were asking him to cool off. He got pissed because he couldn't upset me, and had Naxyldritt disable my ability to post, and later get an admin (who name escapes me right now) to actually ban me. At this point, I didn't care anymore. I was tired of being rejected from the community repeatedly, so I just said 'meh, I'm done with the GCN. the staff are jerks.' Blinx and Naxyldritt then escalated the topic with insults and taking every post they could find (all of which were me helping people) and post them out of context to make me appear like an ass. The topic was locked, and a week later Blinx found me via my Steam account and apologized. Since then, everything's been cool, but I haven't bothered even attempting to go back. I assume despite Blinx admitting it was his fault that I'm still banned though because I had to erase the PHP scripts in the offline pages I saved from the GCN, otherwise they repeatedly refresh.
But anyway, this is all old news. I just thought you should now what actually happened behind scenes and why the people at GCN think lowly of me.

You still didn't reply why on earth you'd need a 7GB pagefile I have a 500GB harddrive, so I don't see any reason why I can't shift a measly 7GB to paging and virtually have 11GB of ram. Some pc's actually come with 16 or 32GB of ram. As for why 7GB, 7's my lucky #
