looks like it. A fast computer might be able to do it in real time if it used my method in a separate thread (since there would be too much delay between frames to do in the same thread), it just wouldn't be able to handle a lot of collisions (anything more then 10 would probably be pushing it) And it might be more promising to use multiple passes where the first pass just outlines as quickly as possible with little regard for shape, and then adds more detail over each pass, especially when there are multiple changes.

If you apply the tracing in a separate thread and use a particle emitter instead of exact physics, there should be little effect on performance (unless there's a lot of collisions happening)

well, i think there is no way to properly do things like that.
it would have to be hybrid vertex, hybrid voxel.

I guess it's safe to say that the future doesn't lie in voxels. It's just not practical for everyday use.

well, technically, it does lie in voxels. but we are at a point where voxels are not dense enough and computers still aren't powerful enough.
for right now, voxels are limited.

I was meaning that voxels would be impractical for realistic graphics, not a block-world like minecraft :/
Hell, we gotta hook over 1400 playstation 3's together just to get 1 t-flop. I honestly don't see voxels being used for everyday purposes in any of our lifetimes.

I still think a hybrid between voxels and vertex would be nice.

^ depends. if you mean polygonal voxels, then true dat.

I ment both voxels and polygons.
polygons to fill in the spaces that voxels can't do for shit.
edit: holy fucking shit the ingame portal 2 editor is fucking badass. BUY PORTAL 2 DAMN IT.

aw, don't pirate from valve, they are the last big game company that isn't corrupted. Well, if I wasn't flat broke and games didn't cost 2 days paycheck, I'd just go buy it. But as it stands, I'm not paying $50 for a game I might not like or play that much. If I like it, I'll go buy it. btw, that tune is so frikkin catchy...

but portal 2 is 20 dollars, not 50. hasn't been 50 dollars since a couple months after the game came out... and to top it off it was on sale yesterday. 6 dollars....
