To be honest, I always thought the music was supposed to inspire a sense of adventure, which it does pretty damn well.

Cheerful? Feels heroic/adventure to me. Also is pretty memorable since it was one of my first games.

I think the Dark World theme is perfect. I'm looking at this in the perspective that it's an overworld theme (which it is) and it sounds just about spot on. And the theme for the dark world dungeons is perfect as well (for a dungeon), although it gets a little repetitive listening to it for 8 dungeons.
