i just found a really easy way to make simple user bars (top one in my sig)
im using the newest release of gimp for this tut
1 - make a new image, ~350x20
2 - choose two colors to fade from, put one as you foreground, the other as your background color
3 - use the gradient tool all the way from the left edge to the right edge of the picture, or stop short somewhere if you want, w/e, just play around with this until it looks decent to you
4 - change the background color. if you want bright text, choose a darker color, for dark text choose a lighter color here. keep the same hue and all from the color on the right of the pic, were just changing the value for some contrast.
5 - goto filters-distorts-erase every other row. select columns to be erased, and make sure you set it to fill with the bg instead of erasing.
6 - after that, blur this layer if you feel it needs it, but only slightly (1px or less)
7 - make a new layer. grab the paths tool (b), and put a point in the top left and top right corners. grab the line it makes in the middle and pull it down some, to get a nice curve. on the tool options tab, click selection from path, and fill this selection with white. blur it, set the layer mode to "Dodge", and play aorund with the opacity bar to get a nice look.
8 - now to add some text. choose a text color close to what you chose for the left side of the user bar. go ahead and add some text in, looking at mine for an example. put it on the right side of the bar, making sure that its not too small or too large. type w/e you want, make it your own unique bar
put something you link to do, a program you love to use, anything
9 - now move this new text layer down under the white blur one we just got done making with the paths tool. re-play around with the opacity bar of that lighting bar, flatten the image down and save as...
there we go!
