okay, i found a pretty easy way to make emocons like, really fast
what you do is you make a template for the emoticons, leaving everything done except the face
(im using gimp here, but ps would work just as well)
1 - make a new ~15x15 image
2 - delete the background layer and make a new transparent one
3 - select the ellipse tool (e) and make a circle, as big as you can
- fill this white and name it "Shape"
4 - make another new layer, whip out the gradient tool (L), turn it to radial, make sure that white is your fg color and black is the bg color. click just inside a "corner" of the circle and drag to the other side, letting this be you lighting. set the layer mode to overlay, multiply, etc. and name this layer "Lighting"
5 - make a new layer and fill it with a soft red. set the layer mode to color and name this layer, well, "Color"
6 - you might notice that it seems a little too bright. the way to fix that is to select your "Shape" layer and lower the brightness slowly (use the Brightness/Contrast tool)
7 - make a new layer, name it "Face", and save this project just the way it is
optional stuff:
*you can also make a "Border" layer, which can be turned on/off by hiding it, makin a bordered emocon an option.
*you can also change the shape of the emoticon simply by changing the "Shape" layers shape, like erasing a chunk of it to make the emocon "be eaten"
*also, you can use the colorize tool to change the color of the emocon; simply select the "COlor" layer and goto color->colorize
hope this was helpful
